Look for a tag bolted to the front cover. Also look for a stamping number on the axle tube near the ends. You can always remove the seal and get the number right off the seal. With the tag off the axle, I can be determined which axle you have. Look on your door tag and see what the axle code is. Post it here.

The vin tag was in the glovebox. The serial# isf25coe21591.After 46 years who knows if the cab is original to the frame. The axel code looks to be 048? Also does that tell what gear ratio it is? Max GVW is 4900
Thanks

If original, the standard axle ratio was 4:55.

I'm not one that knows anything about your year of truck, but there's a chart that's in the back of the NPD catalogue that gives axle codes, ratios, and weight ratings for all Fords 1948 to 1989. It doesn't show a code 048 anywhere for any year. Your might keep looking for a different code number somewhere on the housing. The chart shows that the codes for 57 to 63 front axles would be either A, B, C, D, E, or F. Why the chart includes front axles for 57 and 58, though, I'm not sure since they would have been conversion years. Hope that helps.
