I don't recall anything different on any American made vehicle in the last 50-60 years after all were converted from starter switches.
Some of the older vehicles had a on/off switch, and a tab on the clutch peddel. You turned the switch to on and mashed the clutch to the floor to engage the starter. Others had push button starter switches.
I had a 47 Dodge truck that had a rod with a spring wrapped around it and a small round pedal on the top located to the right of the gas pedal that went straight thru the floorboard to manually engage [make contact] the solenoid to spin the starter. Sort of a heel-and-toe to start it up.
