Here is how i removed the interior handles on my 52 M1:
If you look at the door handle there is a trim ring either chrome or black rubber around the base of the handle. This trim ring is spring loaded (both types. you should be able to press down the top part of the trim ring into the bottom part. This will reveal a pin that holds the the handle on. Knock this pin out with a punch and the handle will come right off. It is a bit of tricky manuever.
Hope this helps you more than confuses you!
BTW - The window crank handles come off the same way.
Mike is dead on here. Most of the time there is 50+ years of crud built up on the door handle which makes locating the pin difficult.
If you don't have a small diameter punch, try a nail set. I had to use a small allen wrench which worked perfectly--just tapped the thing right out and pulled the handle off.
FYI--I bet I lost a half dozen of the pins between the removal and install of the door handles and window cranks. They are small and it is a delicate operation!

Put the pin back in the handle and let the collar slide back up around it. It'll be there when you go to reinstall it.

Great idea. Typically I use baggies and a Marks-a-lot for storage. That way when I misplace the baggies I lose the whole enchilada.
Unfortunately, I kept dropping the pins or driving the things all the way out where they deposited themselves in the bottom of the door thru the window access panel.
Also, I tend to be somewhat "buttered fingers"! I find that my readers have helped this affliction greatly though.
