I have a 72 utility truck with in line si240). The rear end
is so low geared that the engine is screaming at 55mph. Can a
5 speed be found to fit? The truck is great for towing just needs
more top end.
Thanks
You didn't indicate wheather you have a 1/2 ton or larger truck. The little six can take it, just mash the gas and drive to your nearest yard and buy a 390 to install.
All non overdrive trannys have a final output of 1 to 1 so a 17 speed tranny is turning the same as the 3 speed. You would have to go to overdrive to make a difference, or change your rearend gear.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
I too have an I6 240 and wouldnt swap it for a V8 for nothing!!! When I bought my '67 it had the NP 435 with the granny gear and a 4.10 rear-end. Wanna talk about SCREAMING!!! I swapped a 5spd. w/OD from a 1990 F-150(IT WAS SOOO EASY TO DO!!!) I also grabbed another Dana 60 axle with a 3.73 and swapped that in. The truck runs great and drives incredible.
Don't listen to everything you hear, no FE engine will out last that 6 cylinder you have!!!
Ok, Ken, spill the beans, how EASY was it to swap in the 5spd? I've considered this before but could never find accurate info to whether or not it was even possible.
So, aside from getting the tranny, what else has to be done in order to make it work?
