yes, using the beta version in the work computers. works great after got the "beta" bugs out of it! my dad uses it on all his personal computers, he likes it.
The launch date has been delayed until next year. They are still working the bugs out of the system, and they are working on security. Like every new windows release, I won't buy it for at least three years after the public launch date.
the comment are, it had trouble with the see through window stuff, the windows screen would disappear when moving the window, but it has been fixed. the side bar is cool, especially for office work. can't think of anything off the top of my head besides that, my dad is the real expert at it, he won't be back from out of town till saturday, so if you all want more info, i will be glad to provide it then.
Im not sure, but a little while ago they were really putting on restrictions on media used. If a song or movie didn't have a license, it wouldn't play it. (trying to crack down on those "pirates" stealing songs. Hey, in Canada here, its LEGAL for me to download music, and this would render majority of mine useless. Also movies, I back up alot for friends/family, sometimes keep a copy for myself, so these would also be worthless. There are too many restrictions coming out, and Windows is becoming even more of a monopoly. Im tempted to start trying out Linux, and will probably buy a Mac next time, and not use Vista.
One thing that interests me about Vista is going to be it's Virtualization support. I would love to have one machine which could run Windoze and Linux natively at the hardware level at the same time.
Windows is killing the OEM building market for people like me. It's going to cost more to build your own computer now. You'll have to have a supported SAMSUNG hard drive that windows has picked out. It's a 'security' feature for them. They're tired of people pirating it. You can thank pirates for the next problem too.
You won't be watching DVD's or listening to your MP3's unless you have a Microsoft approved monitor (none of which have even been made yet.) The MPAA has thier hand in on this one. Thanks for downloading music illegally everyone! Now my entire computer is NOT Vista-ready.
For you basic home users, if you want to use the 3d interfacing, count on buying ~$100 video card. An Nvidia 6600GT or Radeon 9800Pro would probably be the bottom end cards you could use for smooth operation. Otherwise, it's just going to look like windows with a new theme.
Many other flexibility issues are coming up, and it looks like they're actually trying to pass legislation by 'some odd year' for everyone to have a vista signal coming from thier computer for internet access. Again, the MPAA is in on this. If everyone has this mega-anit-pirating OS, then they can't download this pirated music. I'll admit, this legislation is in it's stages as a baby, but I wouldn't put it past the ever-evolving big brother govt.
i don't know, i lsiten to my downlaods and watch cheap thailand dvd's just fine on my vista computer while on a break at work.
probably true about the video card, but using the dell xps, its not an issue.
i have not heard of any "special" hard drive for use with the vista program.
my dad is using vista on all his computers and work computers, the beta version. no probs with anything at all, of course after the bugs got worked out of it. even the interface on the custom engineering programs works great, if not better than xp.
this is not from what i rread but experineced.
i havn't thrown on my home comp yet because out of laziness.
but it looks to me its going to be an excellent product.
And the pirates out there, will get there hands on the beta version that does the same as the retail, without all the restrictions.
Either that, or someone will have some software that will back door all that junk.
But honestly, I don't think you'll have to have one specific hard drive. That doesn't make any since. Every retailer out there uses a diffrent hard drive in their systems, and I don't think that they are going to switch. Also, there are WAY to many hard drive companies that would throw a hissy if Mr. Gates did something like that. He may be the richest man in the world, but you get about 7 or 8 hard drive producers together, they've got more money than him.
The other HDD manufacturers won't be sunk. They'll just have to make thier sales to OEM computer builders. I have a suspicion that they're going to make you buy the hard drive with Vista installed on it... Of course, all of this isn't ironed out.
And to toss in another minor bump in the road, I heard it will only be coming in DVD format, so you'll need a $30 DVD rom drive. But, thinking along those lines, I doubt Vista will support a simple DVD burner that's capable of burning anything.
