Header Headaches- continued
Scene. Several of grown men standing in a shop around a 1967 F-100 2wd, with built up 390 (E-Brock Heads) scratching their heads. In part #1 I found out that my Dyno"junk" headers won't seal because header ports are lots smaller than 2" High head ports. So I order Sandersons -#FF427, only after re-assurance from them that this application will fit fine in my '67 Truck, and thinking I'll also solve starter clearance problems.
Sandersons arrived, took them out of box, laid on the copper gasket that is a perfect match to the heads, and the tops of headers are like 1/2" to 5/8" lower than gasket. Plus they sent me Two drivers side headers!
I am sending them back. The passenger side went on, but the collector was like 1/4" from oil pan, so I would've traded One heat sink for another (mechanic thinks it would have fried oil pan gasket). And I would have had to cut and grind holes to get ports a little closer to match (meaning restricted top & bottom -instead of just top)So, now I'm trying to decide on another brand. Hedman Elites (89810)seem OK, however that have an ominous footnote #138, "not for Camper Special or vehicles with front anti-sway bar" - Whats up with that?
I don't have Camper Special, but I do have a front sway bar (though not stock, it's a H/D upgrade). But I can't think of any reason for the headers to conflict with sway bars.
I'm also going to go back into my folder an look at Stans, and Headers by ED. I am so ready for this "Headerache" to be over. Trevor the CACWBY in WI.
I think you have the usual header headaches, besides the fact that people sent you two of the same side. Headers always need tweaking and put a hammer to them. Seriously. Pulling starters, putting mini starters, relocating oil filters, relocating brake proportioning valves, you name it, headers will get you there.
I HATE headers. After having all my classic cars back to exhaust manifolds I only ordered mine since I figured it is a truck, there must be more room than in a car!

Thats kinda what I was figuring. But this months issue of American Rodder (I subscribed before it was sold, however I am getting used to new version) as an article on sealing headers, and the leaky ones they use are Hedmans. So I took them off list.
So I did talk to the nice man (Stan) at FPA (Ford Powertrain Applications) who was very reassuring - they only have Ford stuff, and he told me things I wanted to hear, and $600.00 later I think I'm a happy camper - we'll see, he can't ship until a week from Thursday. I'll post results for sure. Trevor the CACWBY in WI. (The Console is in!!!)

in order to get those things on and sealed properly
bolts must be tightened a couple times or so in the
first bitty of use, one guy hadn't touched his dyno junk
for a year and a half.

I only wish I could be so lucky, no - my problems ( and many others as well) are becuase the header ports are smaller than actual exhaust port in the heads. Quite frankly I think that most just bolt them on and if they fit and don't leak they never check if they are actually getting good flow at that junction or restriction. It's only when they leak (and the bolts have been broke in and tightened properly) that they discover how poorly made the @#$%! things are. If the exhaust port is blasting hot air against the flange sooner or later it blasts out, or past the gasket. This months American Rooder has an article on sealing some Hedmans, thats shows what I mean, but even after they seal, they aren't getting the flow they paid for because the blasted header ports must still be smaller than exhaust ports, which is just frustrating. But I'm hoping and Praying that the FPA ones are the real deal, at least he had the right measurements for my 390, 2" high and 1.5" wide. Trevor the CACWBY in WI
