another rear end question

I just finished a Volare IFS install next is the rear,I have a 9" small bearing 28 spline, non posi, mustang from what I have read it should be from a '70-'73 because it measures 61 1/4 axel face to face so the width is right,
rebuilt 429, c6, from what I have read should be 360+hp, I'm building a highway cruser, do you guys think it would be dependable? or do I need a 31 spline, here in socal these things are hard to come by.

You'll have no problems with that rear end.

The only reason to upgrade to 31 splines is if you you are going to hop up the motor and do some drag racing with it. For the type of driving you are going to do and with a fairly stock motor, I say the 28 splines are going to be just fine for you. The 9' rear is pretty indestructable no matter what axles are in it.

If you do want to upgrade, I would get axles from Currie or Strange or one of those vendors and a center section from a mid 70's - early 80's 1/2 ton as just about all of them (except mainly for the 6 cyl and light duty V8's) came with 31 spline center sections. Also a few have posi rear ends. On the data plate look for a letter instead of a number under the axle code (ie A, D instead of a 12 or 13). the second letter i think usually means it is a 31 spline axle (iec 13J is non pois 31 spline, DJ would be posi 31 spline) but don't quote me on this for sure.

I agree with mcdonaldm. I wouldn't worry about running that rear. I have a Currie Prepped 9 inch with 28 splined axles and 3.50 gears with a built up 400 bored to 410. It makes a little over 350 hp and over 400 ftlbs of torque. You shouldn't have problems.

driveshafts usually go before the 9" ever will. If you have money to burn, consider your gears as a place for money better spent as I would bet your mustang rear has awfully high gears.
