I dont think Northern Californians feel they should be included in this assessment. It is Southern California they will keep pointing to as the culprit.
Do you really think the restrictions are a failed attempt to prevent the problem? You guys are kidding right? You don't think your regulations are more restrictive in response to the severity of the problem in your location?
I wonder if not for CA regs, would CA be #1 ?
Who else out there thinks we have an overpopulation problem? Wanna regulate that?
The restrictions (may) be failing, or starting to fail here in Ca., in part due to the big factories having laxed smog regulations; and the current administration wants to lessin these regulations even more; so reported.
The number of cars here don't help either.
I'm surprised we're not number one; being by far the most populas state at near 40 million. The city of S.F. alone has more people than say the state of Vermont.
Ever been in rush hour traffic in So. Cal.? And why is it called "rush" hour?
Maybe because it takes an hour to rush one mile.
People are part of the problem, but you can't regulate that. Nature will eventually do that for us.
Of course regulations have cleaned up the air here since being implemented in the 50's. And it is getting bad again, but not as bad as before.
You want too see bad air? Look at Mexico City.
Of course this JMHO.

I misunderstood, but I get it now. You're #2 despite the restrictions. Duh. It's crazy bad out there for sure, and just a preview of things to come elsewhere. I've been in rush hour traffic in SF, LA and SD - it's nuckin futs! That's why I can't deal with FL anymore - also out of control.
Ya, part of the attraction of VT for me is the lack of traffic. You would laugh at what passes here for traffic. They say there are more cows than people in VT. We had a couple summers with lots of smoke from massive fires in Canada. There is some concern about a new power plant on the NY side of Lake Champlain which burns tire chips to make power, but mostly we get nice clean air here.
Polluted water is bad, but you can resort to bottled water. Having bad air really sucks 'cause there isn't anything you can do about it! Hoping things improve there for you - not sure how though!
As for the water, S.F. is ranked either number 1 or real close to it as having the best tap water for a municipality.
Supposedly they did a blind taste test with city tap water and bottled water.
25% preferred the bottled water.
25% preferred the city tap water.
And 50% couldn't tell the difference.
And the cost difference for each?
Let's just say tap water here is $6.31/con (con is 748 gallons)
BikerWithTruck, I know what it is (was) like to live in a small town with a low population and no smog.
I lived in Mojave, Ca. where at the time (1973) the population was around 3500 and rush hour traffic was two Harleys and a pick up truck at a stop sign.
