I am looking for an air intake for my '88 F250, I like the KandN gen. II with the cold air box and large 360 filter, but I am told it's not available for my truck. Does anyone know where to get one or what would be better/equivalent. (fule injected 351)
hey check out summitracing, they sell a k&n intake for my 89 with a 351 they may have one for yours as for the two intake tubes they have two inlets that go into one pipe to eliminate the two tubes. give summit a look before building your own
I found the KandN filter, but it does not include a new tube or a cold air box, and it's expensive $210-$270, which seems to be a lot for what you get. Any other ideas. Thanks
the first is the simple filter on the end of your stock tubes that you already mentioned. although pricey, this is a nice unit thaqt is CARB legal (a nice plus if you live in CA or any other green state). i've had this intake on a 90 300, an 89 302, and an 89 351 with great results and no issues whatsoever.
now, K&N does make another intake for you truck that actually replaces the whole intake back to the throttle body. i have yet to see it in person, but have seen it on ebay and know it DOES exist. i'd suggest heading to ebay and searching around, or possibly K&N's website? now, what i've heard of this kit is that it doesn't fit too wel and leaves the filter in an odd location. again, i've only heard it. never seen it for myself.
here's the thing. your truck is speed density, so the gains from an intake are gonna be minimal. would having a legit cold air intake that replaced all the tubing and moves the filter location to a section where colder air travels help? sure, but not so much that i'd think you'd notice. also, a lot of intakes tend to put the filter lower than you normally would. on a truck, that's not necessarily a good thing. you never know what you may snag it on or when you may need to ford some water. now you're talking hydrolock.
if i were you, i'd either go with the first kit or do as pfogle suggests and make your own. a little R&D time and some sitting with a K&N catalog should net you the same result. buy two smaller intake cones, slap 'em on the end of your intake tubes with some sort of adapter and call it a day. i prefer the former because i live in CA and like it to be CARB legal, but that's just me.
