I sure wish you had asked this question two weeks ago I had a scrap hauler come by and pickup two 51 4 speed trannys. The wife flat told me to clean up the back yard or I would be sleeping in my F1. Thought long and hard about it, but decided that cab is a little too narrow to sleep in comfortably.
Just hitchiking here. When I got my 52 f2 the speedo worked, but not the odo. Now the speedo doesn't work either (both in the truck and at the beach) Is this my cable or gear? If it's the gear - I'll be looking forward to the answer to Richards question.
If one part of the speedo stopped (odometer) then the speedo itself stopped, I'd suspect the speedo head itself. These are notorious for going bad. If both failed at the same time, then I'd suspect the cable or gear. They usually will make noise from the head. You can still find NOS gears if that ends up being the culprit, but I'm leaning towards the head being bad.

Just pull the speedometer cable housing off the back of the speedometer unit under the dash. Then drive the truck and see if the cable is turning or not, if it is, itsn the dash unit. If not, it's a broken cable or drive gear. My speedometer works fine but the odometer never has worked. One of these days I will get around to tearing the unit apart, or pickup a replacement
If it ends up that the cable needs to be replaced, your local speedometer shop can handle the job. I just picked up a new cable and housing to fit a flathead 3 speed and Autometer speedo from the local outfit here. Cost was a reasonable $40. Even though he put it together from scratch, he did it while I waited, about 20 minutes.
