Howdy Ford fans,
I have a '96 F150 4.9l, 5spd man. I have added a K&N filter and Flomaster cat-back exhaust system. I am trying to get more mileage from the motor without sacrificing torque and/or power. Will an after market cam help, if so does anyone have any suggestions. Right now i'm getting 15-17 mpg if I go no faster than 68 mph (2100 RPM). I heard then hypertech tuner is better than a cam. Anyone know??
I have a 96. Cant answer the tuner question other than I think they require premium fuel. I was wondering if you had much power improvement with the K/N and Flowmaster? Is the stock two cat's still in place?
thx
Jim
15 - 17 mpg is not so bad but I preffer cam than tunners, since tunners usually provide more power by using more fuel also... sometimes high octane fuel is requiered.
If you run in a almost flat area, you can consider change your rear axel ratio to reduce engine RPM at cruising speeds.
In my own experience I got 22 - 23 MPG driving at 69 mph @ 1850RPM with an AOD tranny, 3.55 rear axel and 235/7.5R15 tires
The front cat is in place/operational. The second (rear) is an empty shell. The exhaust was initially installed with both cats in place and working. I pulled the rear (second) cat and blew everything out with the torch to see if I gained anything. Didn't really seem to make a calculable difference in mpg. I installed the K&N first. Noticed a 1-2 mpg increase on the highway. 3 months later I installed the flowmaster (2 1/2 in. x 2 1/2 out) did notice some improved low-end power, nice sound and very much improved mpg as well as a engine temp drop, very noticable at 98 degrees towing 3500lb camper with the a/c cranked up. I was getting 12-14 mpg highway when I bought the truck 4 years ago. With the mods I am getting 15-17 highway & 13-15 in city. I get about the same mpg on highway with or with out the camper as long as I keep the speed around 65 - 68 mph. You get up into 70-80 mph and mpg drops to around the original 12-14 but the angine temp stays cool and steady. I just installed an electric fan and oil cooler at the end of last summer. Haven't really noticed a big change in mpg with the mechanical fan eliminated.
