Hey, Just picked up a 1986 F350 that was somewhat taken care of. It drove kind of rough on ride home. Glow plugs didn't work, no muffler and white smoke with any RPM revs. Still I bought it?? Cleaned Motor, Changed oil ect... I Read about all the horror stories here dealing with glow plugs, and decided to replace them. Of course they are Autolites and I had a tough time getting some of them out ( 5 were pretty well deformed ). I had to use a cats paw to yank one of them and about a whole can of PB Blaster!
Well, Number "7" against the passenger firewall broke its tip. Piston is at TDC, I removed injector and rigged up air hose to injector hole to see what the deal is and no air came though to GP hole. I filled GP hole with PB blaster and also top of piston. 2 hours later: no PB Blaster in injector hole anymore (seaped past rings), But the GP hole is still as full as before. 1).Can I hope the deformed tip will be fine where it is?Will it stay stuck? 2). Heat up the GP hole and try vacume/air method, but if its deformed like the others.. there's no way this will work. Will it? 3). Should I install the injector and FIRE IT UP??
I been thinking... If the Glow plug tip is stuck in hole because it is a deformed autolite and/or stuck with carbon. I should be able to tap it down into the chamber so I can Vacume it out. Cylinder is at TDC. Does this sound right???
Well I had the cylinder at TDC and used a nail set punch and smacked down good for about 5 min till the distorted tip fell into the head (pre chamber). I was pretty scared about the air hose and vacume trick........... Worked great!!!!!!!!!!!! when I opened the Vac and saw the tip I was psyked!!! put in the last Glow plug and she ran like a really well.
