I have an 86 F-150 with a stock 300I6. I used to have a muffler on it but it fell off in a snow drift. I have nothing behind the catalitic converter. I like the way that it sounds but the exhaust is getting in the cab when I idle. I was going to put on straight pipe that dumped out in front of the rear tire. I was just wondering if my engine would have enough back pressure? It may be a dumb question but I dont want to wreck my engine. Any help would be great!
If you don't mind the loud sound, go for it. If you have the original cats, you may want to remove them, or just empty them out, that can remove some backpressure and free things up a little.
You probably want to do something pretty soon, since exhaust fumes in the cab is serious.
I have a 5.8 in mine with no muffler just cats. I did it by accident at 1st but it's such a nice mellow tone I left it that way. I have a 3" exhaust running out the passenger side in front of the rear wheel.
I'm no kid (56-1/2) and don't particularly like loud exhaust but this sounds really nice.

thats what happeend to me and i think that im just going to run it right infront of the passenger rear wheel, to save time and money of going over the axel.
i have seen alot of these older fords with no converters 3 inch pipe and a good chamberd muffler that sound mean. if you go to a chambered mufller mount it back near the axle and you wont get the fumes in the cab nearly at all unless the wind is blowing that direction. not running a turn down or tail pipe also makes it louder more like a race car. I have 3 different trucks all 3 with different exhaust systems. I would suggest goin to a exhaust shop tell them the sound you are looking for and most likely they can tell you the way to get it. by the way the bigger the diameter of the pipe the deeper the tone is, the shorter the pipe is after the muffler determins how loud the exhaust is.
no matter what u do to a 300 6, its gonna sound like a tractor, and i like that. glasspacks make it sound liek a riceburner usually, mufflers dont change it much.
i like the sound of straight pipe but needs 2 b quieter for the cops as it only has 2' of pipe off the manifold it might be since i am young and just got my license
personally i think i sounds like crap with no muffler, but whatever works for you is good.If it was me i would get a cheap Magnaflow or buy a real muffler FLOWMASTER 40 series and trust me youll love the sound of it!
