awaking the beast

my truck has been sitting in my front yard without even being turned over in about 4 mounths...its the whole college thing...hard to keep up with the long distance relationship with my truck. however i am planning on heading home to work on it within the next 2 weeks. what should i do first to it before trying to start it? i was thinking of changing the oil and taking out the spark plugs and pouring some mystery oil into the cylinders. What else should i do?

thanks

my truck sat in storage for four months over the winter. never touched it. it started on the first try. I only checked the fluids before i turned the key. I wouldn't worry about it.

When you do start the truck, do not rev the engine above 2,000 rpm's, try to keep the rpm's as low as possible, this will allow the engine oil to flow throughtout, and will allow the engine to warm up slowly. I have seen people, jump in their truck, start up the engine, and rev the engine way above 4,000 rpm's and spin a rod bearing, very costly mistake.

Check all fluid levels and conditions of oil (radiator fluid, brake fluid, engine oil, power steering oil, transmission oil) . Check fan belts and hose for cracks. Check vacuum lines for cracks or leaks. Grease all grease zerks. Pull off air filter and check for any rat nests. Check the condition of the battery cables. Then engine should be good to go and start it right up. Might need to pump the gas pedal a few times before it fires right up.

Check the tire air pressure.

Buck is right on that one. My truck sat all winter and I fired it up this spring and the carb stuck at a farly high rpm right off firing up and well it spun one of the rod bearings. I would also suggest taking a litre of oil out and puting a litre back in over both heads to give the valve train some lubercation.

All I would do is look under it and make sure it didnt leak anything. 4 months is nothing for it to sit if its in good condition to begin with. Ive had trucks sit for a year (indoors) and they fire up fine. The key is to put some "stabil" in the gas tank before you park it.
