re-drilling axles

I would have put this in a different category but since it's dealing with my 65 coronet and not my truck, it's goin here. ok.. I was just wondering if it's possible to re-drill the axle with a different bolt pattern and if so, what kind of place does that sort of thing. can you do the front as well? also, would it compromise the axle as far as strength goes?

It'd be pretty hard to get everything to line up correctly, but it can be done. Should you? Probably not. It'd be a whole lot easier just to buy adapters.

A machine shop should be able to do it, but it may weaken the flange since it will haev more holes in it.

I agree. Plus, it is a lot easier and cheaper in the long run just buying custom wheels made for the bolt hole pattern.

I doubt you would find a machine shop that would do it due to liability issues

If it's a five lug, you would probably have to weld up one or more of the holes unless you are just going to a different diameter five lug. It really depends on what it is and what you are trying to make it into. If it's a six lug, it might not be to bad if you are going to another six lug pattern.

Sometimes the holes are splined which complicates matters further.

Even if a machine shop did the work, they would probably have to do it on an ordinary drill press because of the difficulty in setting it up in a standard milling machine. If it has to be splined, the quill on a drill press may not be strong enough to press the spline broach tool through.

Sounds like adapters are the way to go.

Expect to pay around $70.00 per adapter, though.
