Transmission replacement!
I decided to start a new topic on this, as I have decided to try to attempt to replace the transmission on my 1985 F-150. I am pretty sure that it takes an AOD transmission, and I got a quote from a local salvage yard for $300.
Am I crazy to think I can do this by myself?
Aside from the regular Haynes/Chiltons manuals, and an adapter for my hydraulic jack to enable it to lift the transmission, what other tools do I need? (other than the basics)
Aside from the trans itself, what other parts will I need?
Do any of you know of a website or book that could help me with this?
Thanks!
J
It isn't a really hard project, though it isn't light either. I would guess it would take me 3 hours to do it depending on the ease of bolt disassembly, not including the filter change. Since you have never done it...bet on a weekend.
You won't need too many tools for the swap, and nothing special except a wobbly socket or universal joint.
I use:
1/2 drive ratchet,
as many extensions as I can put my hands on (2 feet is nice, you get the wrench down where you need it)
Wobbly sockets
regular sockets
hand wrenches
straight slot screwdriver.
drain pan
Starter button
You need to get a manual for the project (most any will do), read it and go look at the project. Ask question before hand, then tear into it.
