I was installing new lifters and I noticed while checking them for straightness, that two of them (side by side) were pointy at the top. What does this mean? Oh, I have a 390, with the stock non-adjustable valvetrain. Thanks alot.
It means you at least need a couple new pushrods and matching rockers. While apart you will want to clean out the rocker shaft and stand to be sure you're getting oil in there...
If I understand, these pushrods have ends where the ball shape has been ground to a point, almose like a pyramid with a shaft coming out the top that matches the oil hole in the rocker? If so, Barry has it right. You lack enough lube flow, and are going to grind any replacement to the same shape.
You may need to check your rocker shafts and/or the feed from the top of the cylinder head. If the pushrods are 'at the end of the line' as far as oil flow (furthest away) you probably have a flow problem. Check actual oil pressure...
THe rocker shafts can get filled with sludge. Loose rocker arms closer to the lube source can leak off too much oil, starving those further away.
Lots of alternatives.
You can run the engine at idle with some cardboard shields at the bottom of the heads to keep the oil from leaking too bad if you want to check flow to the rockers. There *should* be oil coming out the little hole on each rocker arm.

the two that were pointy, were the two right smack in the middle of the pass. side bank. So it was 2 pushrods from two seperate side by side valves. Does that make sense? And everything looks surprisingly clean.
Makes perfect sense. Those two are the closer to the supply that most of the others, so if they failed, it might be because the bottom side of the rocker has worn away the groove that feeds oil out the the 'ball socket'. Each rocker has (had) a groove for feed. Check the others and you may see of what I speak. If the 2 don't, and the others do, get two new rockers...

Check the rockers... I had one that the oil passage from the pivot to the pushrod was never drilled...
the pushrod didn't show much wear but the socket that the pushrod seats into on the rocker did show wear.
Oh, that was on a 360 with 80K mi.
