I really like my Colt AR, 1 : 9 twist, .223 caliber. Name brands on guns are something that I look for and happily pay more for.

Go to ar15.com and read the forums. Anything from Bushmaster, Colt, Rock River Arms, DPMS, and many others are good. I have 2 Bushy's

Armalite is also good

My personal AR is a "Pre-Ban" Colt AR-HBAR 'Match Target'. Box stock. 1:7" twist barrel. It'll shoot 3 shot groups that you can cover with a dime (5/8") at 100 yds using either my handloads or 69 gr. Federal Match ammo! Open sights.

Olympic Arms makes a real good AR rifle.
Fulton Armory markets a series of truly fantastic AR rifles.
DPMS are really good, too.

After getting back from Iraq I felt weird with out my weapon, so I bought a Bushmaster M4. I love that sucker. Much better than my M16 over there except I dont have burst anymore
I'd say Colt would be the #1 choice, then Bushmaster.

I'll second the DPMS as well. Mine has the Jewell trigger and I have two uppers for it. One is the 20" fluted full bull with match open sights for the DCM 200 yard matches. The other is a 24" full bull flattop with a 6.5x 20 Leopold scope on top. Both are 1:8" twist barrels that will shoot bullets weighing 55 grs or heavier. Both barrels will stack the bullets in a hole at 100 meters. I understand that the Bushmaster is also a pretty accurate piece. If you are trying to save some bucks on this purchase- a DPMS is not a cheap date. Make sure to get clips with the green carrier in the clip- they seldom have issues. Avoid all clips with no name on them.

Still like my Springfield '03...

bought it by mail for $12.95 back in '63 when they cleaned out the Armory up in Mass, 4 months before Lee Harvey screwed up the mail order gun business...

that and my M-1 and M-14 do me just dandy.

Ayone want an Akirasaki 7.7mm Jap bringback? Just found it in my Uncles basement. He forgot he brought it back from Tokyo. Mum is ground off.

wlihntr. . . .

No BS. Just fact. I have done it several times. With witnesses.
In all my years of shooting, instructing and competing, this is the first time that my integrity has been questioned.

The rifle is capable of doing exactly as I say.
The last time that I did it though, was off of a sandbag rest, at St. Charles Sportsman's Club, Waldorf, Maryland.

I also have done it in High Power Rifle competition at the same rifle range, in "prone slow-fire" stage. National Match (reduced) course of fire.

Again. . . . NO BS. Just fact.

Location: St. Charles Sportsman's Club, Waldorf, MD.
Date: 11/03/1996 Range: 100 yds. Target: MR-31C High Power Rifle Competition, "NM Reduced" course of fire.
Rifle: Colt's AR-HBAR 1:7 twist Box Stock with the exception of a military leather shooting sling, drawn 'real tight'.
Ammo: Federal .223 brass, 23.0 gr. H-335, Sierra 69 gr. BTHP, Federal 205M primer.
Witnessed by a (retired) Navy EOD 'Specialist', C.J. Galbreath

As you can see, the distance from '0' to the right hand hole is less than 1/2' and the dime (above the group) was laid so as to show dimension.

Location: St. Charles Sportsman's Club, Waldorf, MD.
Date: 04/07/2001 Range: 100 yds. Target: Redfield 'Sight-In Target'
Rifle: Colt's AR-HBAR 1:7 twist Box Stock Ammo: Federal .223 brass, 23.0 gr. H-335, Sierra 69 gr. BTHP, Federal 205M primer.
Fired from sandbag rest. Open sights.
Three (3) shots less than 1/2" extreme spread!
Witnessed by B.K. Malpasso, P.G. Co. Firefighter (retired)

I had a Colt H-bar 20+ yrs ago (no complaints), and now own as my last centerfire rifle, a Bushmaster Super V-match, two stage trigger, 16" barrel, and use a Burris 1.5-6x scope with illuminated reticle, and a Harris Bi-pod. Old, poor vision and a host of other excuses, I can shoot just about 1.25", if I am lucky, @ 100 yds on my best day, with no wind. I did find this to be accurate enough for my needs, to at least 300 yds.

The only problem I have ever had is a few primers exploding from the cases, and the pieces went inside the trigger assembly, which put an end to my shooting for the day. After four months of requesting the manufacturer (PMC) to make good for the problem (which they refused to do), I was able to get a refund from Cabela's for the faulty lot of ammo.

The forend of the aluminum barrel shroud on this was not vented, and gets very hot! They have since come out with other shroud options since I bought mine some years ago.

"Old too soon, smart too late!"

ok let be a little more clear. could you have laid down that kind of group with open sites a number of times over many years of shooting...sure. i got the impression that you where claiming you could shoot a sub .75 MOA group with open sights at 100 yards at will.

I have never stated 'at will.' I will state that the groups are representative of what I have shot, consistently, though.

My eyes aren't what they use to be. 'Age' has had it's way with them, plus, I scratched my right eye badly several years ago.
Before my eyes were scratched, my eyesight was 20/15 in the right eye, 20/18 in the left.
Today, un-corrected, right eye is 20/80; the left 20/20. Corrected, my right eye is still slightly blurred. And yes, I am 'right eyed' and shoot right handed.

I also have broken my neck and I don't have the mobility that I once had. (Read that as I can't get a decent spot-weld on the stock and consequently, can't get a decent sight picture.)

With that said, the rifle is CAPABLE of doing as I said. No more, no less.

I wouldn't have made (or posted) a claim that isn't true.

Today, this rifle sits in the gunsafe awaiting the installation of a Delta H-BAR cheekpiece and scope mount and a Leupold 3x9 scope, just so that I can shoot it, again.

Again, I stand by my word.

Keith

EDIT: On the flip-side of this coin, wlihntr, you stated: "i did alot or research before i got mine. i wanted a very accurate target rifle and ended up with a DPMS Panther bull 20. i added a Chip McComick CNC single stage drop in trigger, Titanium coated bolt and carrier, DPMS Tactical grip, Accu-wedge, trigger gapper and had the barrel cryoed. it will shot sub 1/2 (.5 MOA) at 100 yards."

All things being equal. . .Did you state 'at will'???
