Seth1, my 02 Ranger auto trans did the same thing. I believe this is a normal thing for this trans.

Bad news for mine. Apparently the problem is deep in the tranny, and needs to come out and be rebuilt(servo piston problem I think he said). Looks like its gonna cost me a ton. Got another place I am going to take it to. Might be looking to trade it in, if I can't find a cheaper option.

I had the same problem with my 01. It turned out to be a bad valve body gasket, problem solved. The problem did return about 10,000 miles later, so they replaced the valve body itself. That was 20ish thousand miles ago, no problems.
