Speed Sensor Help

Ok so I am trying to fix the speedo and cruise on my '87 f150 4x4 standard trany. I have taken off the spedo and it seems fine, the cable seems fine when I spin it from under the truck. I pulled the speed sensor off and then a small shaft with a magnate on one end w/ a place for the cable to go into. On the other end there is really nothing, something that looks like it could have been gears or something was crimped on it.

I can spin this shaft freely with it all the way in the transfer case.

All of this seems to either mean something broke off or that I am really missing something. The Pics in the shop manual show another gear on the end of other set ups but they don't have a pic of my exact set up so I am not sure.

I just don't know where to go from here so any advice would be great.

Thanks

Which speed sensor are you talking about? I think there's one in the transmission, and another in the rear differential.

I am talking about the one in the transfer case. This being the equivlent of the one in the tranny for a non 4 weel drive. It provides the signal cruise control as I understand it.

I really don't think I need a new cable as it turns freely. I think maybe I will go to the dealership today and see if they have an exploded view of my particular speed sensor set up and see what parts they sell.

Well the dealer showed me a better picture of my speed sensor and then pulled one of the shelf and I discovered that only half the speed sensor had come out of the TC. The drive gear was still in there. Well I worked on it for a bit and got the rest out. So now I have a new one and hopefully when I put it all back together it will work.

So, I put it all back together and nothing is working.

I atached the spedo cable to the speed sensor unit and the drive gear and speedometer cable where well mated and worked together. Then I put it into the TC and rolled the truck around and nothing happeaned. I took it out and stuck my finger in there and didn't really feel anything that seemed like gears. On the bottom of the hole there was a cylinder that had small groves that felt like they had been gears at one time.

What should it feel like. Or what should I expect. Any other suggestions??

I am really at a loss now. I want to fix this but I don't want to drop the TC to do it.

Thanks,

There are two gears.

The drive gear is on the output shaft of the transfer case.

The driven gear is the one on the end of the speedometer cable.

Ok well I have the driven gear then.

So what does this drive gear look like, or where does it go or anything. Because I have no idea what I am looking for then.

The factory service manual shows a complete tear down of the transfer case. They don't specifically show the removal of just the drive gear for the speedometer.

I'm not positive, but it looks like you may be able to replace the drive gear by doing the following.

1)Pull the driven gear assembly from the transfer case

2)Remove the rear drive shaft

3)Remove the nut holding the output shaft yoke. Easier said than done. The torque of the nut is around 120-150 Ft. Lbs. There is a tool that bolts to the yoke and has a long lever attached to it to keep the yoke from turning while you break the nut loose. Or you can use an impact wrench.

4)Remove the yoke

5)Pry out the rear oil seal

6)Remove the drive gear (Looks like it is splined to the output shaft) Book doesn't say if it's held in with a snap ring.

The drive gear meshes with the driven gear. So if your driven gear is not turning, I'd say the teeth on the drive gear are worn out. The drive gear should turn when the output shaft moves. With the transfer case in 2 hi and the rear drive shaft removed, you should be able to turn the output shaft/yoke with your hand and see the drive gear turn.

Go back to the dealer and ask if you can see what the drive gear looks like. (If they have one in stock).

Call a transmission shop that does four wheel drive transfer case repairs. Tell them you have a Borg Warner 1345 transfer case and ask if it's possible to replace the speedometer drive gear without pulling the transfer case.

Thanks,

that all makes alot of sense. I have the Factory manuals I was just looking at the speed sensor stuff and not the TC pages. I will take a look at that.

Thanks again for some great info.
