problem with 96 explorer head light

problem with 96 explorer head light
i have a 96 explorer and a couple of months ago the left headlamp went out. I just thought it was the bulb, but it wasnt. what happens is that the left headlamp wont turn on unless i have the brights on, then thats when they will work. i just want to know if someone knows what would be the cause of this problem before i take it in and get ripped off
