What can i use to remove a little carbon on cylinder ridge instead of reamer?? Not enough ridge there to use a reamer ,just want to clean off that area before pulling pistons out.
Auto parts stores generally carry carbon solvents. I found some at Autozone. Soaked some pistons overnight, used a stiff bristle brush, and they're like new.
That ridge is more than just carbon built up. It is metal under the carbon. Use the reamer to eliminate the ridge b4 you push the pistons out if you plan on re-using those pistons. If you don't remove the ridge first, you take a chance on damaging the ring lands when driving the pistons past the ridge. Good luck.
Holland is right. Even if it is 'almost too slight to catch a fingernail', remember that the top of the top piston ring, when new, has no where to go when it runs into the ridge. It has a very square corner, that the old ring had worn down to conform to whatever ridge is there. It has a tighter fit in the piston groove than the old one, and will not like being crammed into the bottom of the ridge.
Do what you want, but you should use a ridge reamer.
Also, with the ridge there, the top ring will have worn slightly to conform to the bottom of the ridge.
When you put new rings in there, you can crack them the first time you crank it over.
Another gem I learned from my machinist.
Pulled apart a motor that was just "re-ringed" and his first comment was it had no compression because all the top rings were cracked from not removing the ridge.
