I have a chiltons book and cannot find the torque specs for the spindle nuts.(5 of them) She's a 78 1/2 ton 4x4.
Can you guy's help me out. Thanks and have a good new year.
hi Kevin, spindle nuts should be torqued at 75ft. lbs. the best way is to torque them in steps start at 30 t. lbs. then 55 ft.lbs. then the final 75 ft.lbs. this way nothing should bind up on ya. i've got a 77 with the same dana 44 axle and i've been torquing mine at 75ft.lbs. for many years now,, never a problem. have a great new year. Aren't there six of these nuts that hold the spindle on? The torque spec. from Dana on older 44's was 35-55 ft./lbs. If I'm not mistaken these are 3/8" x 24 NF, but perhaps they are 7/16" x 20 NF, I don't recall as we speak. In either case, and not to be critical, 75 ft.-lbs. sounds awfully high. A handy chart I have gives maximum recommended specs for 3/8" threads as 35 ft./lbs. and 55 ft./lbs. for a 7/16" thread.[/FONT]
hey stockman, that's cool you have the specs. well 75 is not to tight. i've had my front end tore apart so many times i can't remember, and i've always torqued the bolts ( there are only 5 bolts ) to 75 ft.lbs. and i've never had any related problems what so ever. not even a stretched bolt tread. take it easy. i'll go for the extra torque and security.
