1984 f150 302 durasparkII system, I cant figure out why i have good spark one day then nothing the next. today i went to go to work and she wouldnt fire up. i used a test light to see if i had power to the coil when the key was in the run position and it was good. next i pulled the coil wire from the distributer and had the wife turn it over and the light never blinked once. for two hours i tested this that and everythin i thought of and nothing. then i noticed that the ground coming from the module was not very good so i made it better. the truck fired right up. she ran but now it seems to loop alot at idle speed. i went back to start it up and the battery was dead(probably from trying to get her going for so long). the module and coil is original and have never givin me a problem. is it common for the module to work then stop then work then stop, regardless of temp or anything? the truck seems to be getting very poor gas milage lately and for some reason i can twist the distributer back and forth with no resistance. is this common aswell?
Module- yes, they can start acting strange when they're about to quit on you.
Coil- possibly going bad also. I personally wouldn't replace just one- do both. One warning- use only Motorcraft modules- through experience, the in-house brands are junk. Take the old one with you so you can match connector colors- there are differences.
Distributor- no, you should not be able to move it at all. When you say it moves, is it the whole thing (including the shaft where it clamps to the engine) or just the top where the cap is attached? Check hold-down clamp for tightness. This is probably a lot of the mileage and idle problem, and can make it hard to start when it's out of time.
