I have the opportunity to replace the 302 in my 1970 Mustang (Not the original engine). They are selling me a running stock 351W for $500 and a running stock 351C for $600... Which one should I go for? The Mustang will NOT be a daily driver, only weekends for a while to show off and race other classics occasionally mostly.I don't know if either of the two engines are the 2V or 4V (I don't know the difference either).
To recap, 351C or 351C? Difference between 4V and 2V Windsors? Difference between 4V and 2V 351 Clevelands? Which would be my best bet?
Thanks!
2V or 4V on a Windsor; not much difference, just the intake and carb being either 2bbl or 4bbl.
2V or 4V on a Cleveland, big difference. the Clevelands have different heads, there is a number "2" or "4" cast in to the top corners of the heads at the corners of the valve covers. some 351M/400 heads have an "M" cast in, some have nothing at all. there are different variations of the 4V heads(open/closed chamber) that can't be seen when the heads are on the engine.
in a 70 mustang i'd go with the Cleveland, that's what belongs there. any guarantee on the "running" engine?
BTW, make sure it's a Cleveland and not a 351M. if it's a 400 i'd take it, but $500 and $600 is a little high unless guaranteed and/or you can hear run prior to sale.

when you say 4 valve do you mean 4 valves per cylinder or do you mean 4 barrel heads? i have a 351 C with the 4 stamped on the heads but its only got 2 valves per cyl. 1 intake 1 exhaust.
did they make a 4 valve head engine in the cleveland? everyone keeps saying 4V and i thought they meant 4 valve but do they really mean 4 barrel when 4V is stated?
yep on my heads it has 4 stamped on them so mine is a 4 barrel engine. on the 4 barrel engines (351C) do they have 2 bolt main or 4 bolt main caps? i heard they was 4 bolt on the 4 barrel and 2 bolt on the 2 barrel is this true?
pretty sure my 351C is a HO version. can you tell me the years a 351C 4V was made?

there were some 4bolt main clevelands but 4v doesn't mean 4bolt too. But all the cleveland blocks have the material in the main webbing to be converted to 4 bolt mains if you so desire.
Personally on a mustang I would go with the cleveland.
These are gross or flywheel ratings and compression ratio is advertised not actual. Now to start the arguements. The 4V Cleveland was a high reving BigBlock killer in its day but needed gears to work well.It was not a responsive motor at low rpms. The Winsor was a better street engine with strong tq at lower revs.Today thanks to all of the 5.0 stang guys there are alot more parts to build a Winsor than a Cleveland

Reason: oops
W is a more reliable set up imo- better oiling system- better design- and you can build it to get whatever you want out of it with the exception of monster torque down low. So many builds and better economy as well.
I was at a swap meet this weekend and there was a guy selling a bunch of Ford engine parts. I was asking him this same question "351 windsor or cleveland?". He said that if he was starting out today, without a bunch of used parts, then he would go windsor. His reason was that there are more performance parts available for the windsor.
