A couple days ago I was merging onto the interstate and went to pass a slower car, I hit the gas and started to pick up speed when the overdrive kicked in... I was doing aprox. 65 when it did kick in and the rpms went just over 3 when the truck started to sputter and back off. The truck is a 01 ranger 3.0 and have had the trans fluid replaced about 25,000 miles ago. Its got about 80k miles on it and I take pretty good care of it.
Any help would be appreciated.
one other thing.... It only happened once and since then I have gotten the truck up to appr 80 mph but that was "babying" it because if there is something wrong with the trans I didnt want it to do anymore damage.
Wait I'm missin' what you mean. You were gettin' up to 65 and it did what? It shifted into overdrive? It downshifted? It sputtered and died? I'm lost sorry.
I thinking he means it was in overdrive(fifth) and when he went to pass the slower car, it kicked down into drive (fourth, thats what the rpms sound right to be). Or possibly third, I've never driven a Ranger 5-Speed Auto.
If that is what he means, it sounds like an engine problem instead of a tranny problem. Don't know what the problem is, though. Fuel Delivery maybe?
I went and got my fuel filter changed and got some fuel injector cleaner and that seemed to work... Ive driven it hard for the past couple of hours and nothing out of the ordinary. I checked my fuel filter this morning and it was the same one i had put in two years ago, but back in January I had it serviced at the Dealership and one of the things they charged me for.... a fuel filter. I know because I put dates and mileage on the new replaced parts just in case I decide to sell it. Monday I get to go to the dealership and bust some heads. Thanks for your help everyone.
