Question Small Valve Cover Leak

I tightened the valve cover bolts down too tight and develped a small leak. I tightened them by hand, of course, with a 3/8 ratchet but realize that they only need a measly 98 inch/pounds or so. I have loosened them to around specs and I wonder if this will solve the problem or have I ruined the very expensive gaskets?! I was carefull not to overtighten but they were certainly more than 9 ft/pounds. Will the gaskets be okay? Thanks!

valve cover gaskets don't need to be he-manned. they are made of a very flexible tin-like metal, that doesn't need to be tight to seal. where the bolts are, the bolt head will actually pull the metal valve cover down, while the gasket will hold the center part up, and warp the sealing surface. the gaskets are probably crushed, i would get new ones if you want to do it right. look on ebay for cheap ones. i would remove the valve covers and try to straighten the rail.
