I just had the TCC solonoid replaced in my '99 exp, and the guys at the trans shop told me that there was allot of metal shavings in the pan. I'm wondering if the metal shaving were there because of the bad solonoid, has anyone had their trans rebuilt is this expensive?? What kind of questions should I ask the guys at the trans shop?
What problem did the transmission originally have ? how many miles on it and how was the truck used, heavy towing, no towing etc. All transmisions have some shavings in the pan, the oldest trick in the book is to show those to a customer and sell them a $1000 to $3000 transmission repair that they do not need. Are they suggesting a rebuild because of the shavings ? I have the fluid changed and try it with the hnew TCC solonoid and see how it runs, if you have problems maybe try another shop, sometimes the small independent guys are better than a chain, I would have sworn I had a bad transmision in a buick regal the local independent gut took it for a ride with me and said no its something with the motor, he spent 15 minutes and determined it was a clogged catayltic converter and $150 later it was good as new.
Hey thanks for the response Scholzee, the truck has 94000 miles on it but it just had a new engine put in, because of the head gasket warping (under warranty, thank God). I use the truck for regular driving no towing. The guys from the shop just called me and told me that after they put a new solonoid in it shorted and blew, so they traced back to a melted wiring harness on top of my manifold exhaust, luckily they can repair the melted wires I don't need a whole new harness
The harness may not have been correctly routed when the new engine was put in and eventually shorted and took out the solonoid. That many miles there will be metal shavings in the fluid, fresh fluid change and you should be good for another 50K.
