Decisions, decisions. I have a 66 f100 with 300ci six withthe typical autolite 1 barrel and all of the associated "issues" like hesitation and poor acceleration. Sitting on my bench is a Holly and Carter 1 barrel. Any thoughts on which one would be better to rebuild and replace the autolite? Most of my driving is around town and highway but at times I pull an 18 foot travel trailer.
Go for the Carter if it is a YF. The best thing I ever did was get rid of the Autolite and go Carter. Trouble free so far.....Oh unfortunately you wont get to keep your nice oil bath air filter if you still have one. It wont fit on anything but the Autolite. I had to use one of those ugly chrome jobs with the crappy, plastic, adapters. Oh well it works....
Thanks for the info. The Carter is a YF. The only thing I had heard about the Carter was that there was some fabrication needed for the choke and there were times it did not work as well under a load (I sometimes haul a camp trailer). Has that been your experience or has it performed well all around? I guess I can give up the oil bath to get some imporved performance.
Mine works fine under all conditions. I live in the Virginia foothills so my 300 sees plenty of variations in load. The Carter is put through its paces.
Yes some fabrication is needed to get the choke hooked up. I think I ended up using a large paper clip to loop through the little hole in the lever arm. Then I used one of those cable stops you can buy from Motormite to join the paper clip to the choke cable. You can use the old cable bracket from the Autolite, but you will have to bend it to get the proper angle. Sounds crazy but it works. I got the idea from this site. What I STILL have never figured out is how the choke would have hooked up on a truck that came from the factory with this setup. God knows there were plenty of them 67 and up. There should be some kind of clip and bracket from Ford. It would be nice to have a friend in a Ford dealer parts dept. to let me look through the microfische. Maybe parts are still available from FOMOCO to do this without the jackleg treatment. I really hate rigging things, but sometimes you just have to improvise.
If anybody sees this and knows how to properly hook up the choke please educate.....
Thanks, I will probably go that route. This project will move back on the list for awhile. 3 weeks ago I got a 66 f100 4x4 complete except for a missing 4 speed. I am going to pull the NP435 from my other rig and put in the 66 and then its off to the paint shop so I can have it in the driveway to work on it from there (momma says no more junk in the driveway). Not sure what she means but I think she is referring to the two other trucks and not me.
