Oily garbage inside intake

OK folks, I pull of the rubber intake in order to fit the new Kwik Filter Fits like a glove, albeit a tight one!

But I see this goo and sludge sitting here and I don't know if it is bad. I know I have not read a lot of posts describing this -

I looked a little further down and the turbo doesn't look dusted as I have seen in other posts, but I will have to take a closer look when i have more time.

I cleaned the intake hose and the piece in the picture with a paper towel.

Any diagnosis? How bad is it?

That oily goo is from your CCV (Crank Case Vent) and is normal to find in our powerstrokes. There is a mod called the CCV mod that reroutes the vent out of the intake. You can do a search on the mod and find out alot more of what to do.

dang. what kind of filter were you running? either your filter was passing dirt, or your oil became sludgy (looks like that on the plastic) from extended cold running and excessive idling. check the oil on your dipstick to see what it look and smells like (and tastes like if youre an extreme PSDist.)

Oil is good now, I have changed it every 5k since I have had the truck.

But this truck has a past. Long story short, the truck lives its whole life in New Mexico, owned by a childhood friend.

By 2004 it had 60k miles and had been maintained well. In 2004-5 my buddy goes thru the horrible, messy, divorce, and ends up putting 40K miles on the truck in a year. Running around doing a whole lot of nuthin' I am pretty sure this is where Maintenence might have lagged.

Sadly, he takes the quick route out of his problems and we are left to pick up the pieces. So in truth, I don't know what service was done, other than a handful of reciepts I find in his personal effects. But I do find fresh gallons of Rotella, new fuel and oil filters, so I know he was trying.

At 100k I buy the truck from his family, and change every fluid and filter. I take out the K&N and replace with Napa standard replacement filter.

Then I find FTE and it has been all uphill since!! (or downhill from my wife's perspective)

So that is where the put the CCV!!?!?! Who the heck thought of that? I have read about the CCV mod and didn't really understand why it was needed. NOW I get it!

Ed,
I'm really sorry about your buddy and truley hope that you can get the truck back up and runnin better than ever.

If its any consolation about the CCV my trucks got about 146k on it and the inside of mine looked way worse then yours when I was first looking at it. I have since cleaned it out and am looking for some 4" tubing so that I can do both the ccv and kwik mods to open up the intake.

Thanks, Stoker for your kind words and encouragement. I was a bit panicked when I saw the crud but now it makes sense.
