How many more gallons?

Was wondering how many more gallons people are able to put in their tanks after the pump auto shutoff? My wife's 01 Explorer I've put in as much as 4.5 gallons. I usually try to pull in at a pump where the front end sits lower. Her 96 just took 2.5 to fill after the auto shutoff. Any idea why this is? Why the difference?

You might want to do a little searching on the forum about forcing fuel into the tank.
I've heard negative stories, but can't remember exactly what they were.

I forget the specific amount someone figured out once. They removed the filler neck, etc, and measured the amount they could get into the lines.

My Explorer and Ranger both hold more when the front end is pointed downhill away from the pump. The wife's Escape is just the opposite - it holds more when it is pointed uphill. Has to do with where the tank is positioned under the vehicle and where the fill lines run to. Explorers and Rangers run to the back of the tank, so naturally if the vehicle is tilted, it will change the amount that can fill it. Bad thing is that if you fill it to the brink - when you pull off, the gas will level out and could spill. It also leaves no room for the fuel to expand/contract from heat and cold.

My X drinks it so fast I never have that problem though...

It will also vary from station to station, state to state, and pump to pump. The cutoff is triggered by a pressure differential, and they are not all set the same. Some cutoff quicker than others. Also, some states mandate vapor recovery systems on the gas nozzles while most do not. Like CobraXP said though, make sure that there is some room left for expansion.

O.k., Been filling at pretty much the same station for a number of years. Back when we had the 96 and now with 01. And I generally fill at the same pump so I can get an accurate indication of fuel consumption. Even when filling at different stations get basically the same result. With my truck, which is a diesel, I get 3.4 gallons in after shutoff and this seems to be a standard amount amongst Ford diesel owners. I was just curious because of the difference between the 96 and 01. The 4.5 gallons just seems like quite a bit. Is the tank configuration that much different between a 96 and 01? I'll try searching for some more info on topping off the tank. Still, no one has responded with a similar experience. Thnx for the input.
