I am having trouble with the wiring harness in my truck... (its shot) where might I obtain a replacement.. Painless wiring has kits but lack the Lights and wiper switch wires.. too complicated for me and i dont want to have to take it to a repair shot for a expensive rewire..
Matt thanks for the info, but there are no competent shops in my area that dont charge at least 90.00 a hr for labor. So Cal Pickups doesnt offer a Harness for the 73 to 79 model years. I forgot to mention that. My bad. its a 73 F250 2x4
If anybody has any suggestions please feel free.. :-)
The old fashioned way comes to mind, take a meter and measure for 12 volts along the way. Example, after turning on the lights, if a tailight is not working and has a good bulb, check for a bad ground (painted over, rust, etc..) then check for 12 volts starting at the farthest from the switch and work your way back to the dash. I had to rewire the rear lights, dome light, and gas tank wire in my trucks, just took some time and labor. After 66, ford went to the printed circuit board on the instrument panel. I inspected a 72 panel and was able to see the wire path where it was damaged and causing a gauge not to work. These are very difficult to fix, in my opinion..
I would prefer to have a kit or something similar. Rewiring peice by peice is both too time consuming, and a little more than i wish to attempt. The gauges aren't a Problem I'm going to change out the gauges with AutoMeter. Those printed circuit boards are easy to work on and with I think. this one has been repaired sevral times.
Scottf,
You didn't say where you are from but I would guess that somwhere in your area, there is a salvage yard that may have all or part of the harness that you would need to repair the existing harness. This would help with the connectors that most aftermarket kits will not include.
I know you mentioned that you would prefer not to dive into such a labor intensive project but it takes just as much time to install a new kit as it does to troublshoot and repair an existing one. In most cases, you can swap a harness with all of the right connectors in half the time.
You won't find a drop in harness from anyone with all of the connectors, these would cost WAAAAY to much to make.
Good luck with your endeavors.

Well Im in the middle of Kentucky. With the local toyota plant.. its Toyota and chevy country.. for good Ford parts I have to goto a different area. but However was hoping for new wire. Not 26 year old. This is a daily driver and dont want to have to redo this for a long time to come. I guess I will try a painless kit... shouldnt be too hard to change out the power wire to the headlight switch and the wipers..
Thanks for the advice and feedback from everybody. =)
At least the painless wires that aren't there are labeled as to where they go...
