Help! Turned engine with dist. out, something dropped
I have a 1972 camper special, and I was replacing intake gaskets. Well in order to take off the rocker shafts I had to turn the engine, but the dizzy was out and I heard something drop. Can anyone tell me what happened?
Sounds like it was the shaft that drives the oil pump. Look down in the dizzy hole and you should see a hex shaped shaft sitting there. If not, it probably fell down in the oil pan. You will have to pull the pan to get it out.

this is a true statement, although i had one drop out one time and just used a magnetic socket and lowered another one into place. put the distributor back in and ran it for another 10 years.. when i rebuilt the motor it was there in the bottom of the pan without a bend or anything in it... jist of the story i guesss is that i wouldn't bother pulling the pan while it's in the vehicle cause the chances of getting it to seal again are not good. go buy another one and call it good..
Had the same problem twice now LOL I got one of the pocket pen magnets and lifted it back up from the bottom and set it in place. A good light source and patience go a long ways..or just leave it and get a new one.. I was worried it would end up in the crank rotation at some point so I had to get it LOL, BOL
yeah , I want to leave it in there, simply because I'm too lazy to pull of the pan ( it is dry as a bone right now.) but I'm going to have to make an attempt at getting it out with a magnet. It's going to bother me with it in there.
the magnet is pretty easy, get the one with a small magnet head about 1/4" OD it worked well for me.. it's a bit tricky to get the magnet to release it once in place but can be done. I havent tried yet but I think you could use the vac advance hose to set it in place and use a brazing rod (or similar) down the center of the hose to separate the shaft when ready..just a thought havn't tried it..
4x2 or 4x4? If it's the 4x2 pan, you have the deep sump in the front of the pan, and that shaft is GONE!
If it's the 4x4 pan, it could still be standing in there, and you could possibly get it with a long magnet stick.
Either way, if you can't get it out, turn the motor over a few times to make sure it's cleared the crank, and once you're sure the motor turns freely, ignore it. Unless you roll the truck, that shaft is not going to come up and get in the way of the crank
ford390gashog, while I'm (was) comfortable with removing and replacing rocker shafts with the engine any-old-way, I've seen some manuals say to rotate the motor until none of the rockers are fully depressing any valves, as in, they try to get the rockers all somewhat relaxed.
I got a new shaft from napa today (longer than I thought) now I just need to know how to install it. It has a little retaining clip 5/8" in on an 8 1/2" shaft. I am trying to avoid another mishap.
