Has anyone seperated the Grill Surround from the grill...

Has anyone seperated the Grill Surround from the grill on a 04/06 F150? Can this be done with out damaging the clips that hold it togther? I have bought and installed the Harley Davidson Grill it comes with the black surround. But I like the look the chrome surround gave the truck. Any advice would be great. Thanks

I have done it several times without breaking any clips. You just have to be very careful and bend the clips ever so gently. However, the clips on the '06 Harley grille are much more delicate and will easily break. If a couple clips break, you will still be fine.

I used two or three screwdrivers. One to gently! pry the retainers up to release the inner grill. I then put the others between the seperated parts to prevent them from reattaching. Kinda like what you do when you remove a bicycle tire.

You don't need screwdrivers really...at a point I ended up using rags to keep them seperated. Just be patient.

I broke a few in the swap as well, but you have to be REALLY gentle with them. I wound up wedging something into the clips i broke and used duct tape to prevent them from rattling. Works fine, invisible from the outside. It's a real pain in the @$$ process but once you get a system you're good.
