coolant temp. sensor

hey guys had my codes pulled today an the coolant temp. sensor, along with the MAF sensor and the O2 sensors came up. the truck is a 93 3.0 4x4 an seems to be a little slugish. so i went to the local NAPA auto store an got a new coolant temp sensor. the only problem is that the one i took out was a brass one an the one the guy gave me was a plastic one. he said it should be the same thing cause the 2 of them came up when he looked up the part #. and the plastic one was half the price. i also replaced the MAF sensor. my engine light is still comming on after 5 min of driving, and the truck still seems to be performing about the same. any suggstions? thanks guys

To address the codes, you need to first fix KOEO (key off engine off) codes, then KOER (key on engine running), and finally CM (continuous memory) codes. This sequence must be followed. You must also fix the lowest code number first within each of these three code types. The reason for this is, for example, a fault causing a KOEO code can trip a KOER code; fixing the KOEO code will make the KOER code go bye-bye. Likewise on the order of repair based on the code #.

Gotta ask this, which temperature sensor did you replace????

There are two. One is just for the temp gauge, the other is for the computer & thats the one you needed to change if it's bad, it also is the one with more than one wire running to it. The single wire sensor is only for the temp gauge sending unit & it has no input to the computer.

Would be helpful if you would list the trouble code numbers you got from the computer & the order in which you extracted them, as Bill suggested this is important.

The MAF may just need cleaning, if so, remove it & carefully clean with throttle body cleaner & be careful not to damage the wire grid, or get things dusty or dirty from grimey hands, gotta keep it & the insides of the air tube squeeky clean, when your reassembling things.

If you find the MAF is dirty, you need to find out why it's dirty & fix that problem too, lest it get dirty again. Many times it's an improperly buttoned up air box, air tube, or air filter bypassing dirty air to the MAF sensor.

Also, as el conquistador said, it'll be important to depower/reset the computer, so it can relearn new operating parameters, with any new or cleaned parts.
You can do that by disconnecting the negative battery cable as suggested, or pulling the computers power fuse.

The O2 codes depending on what they are, could be from the upstream problems, so don't replace them yet.

How many miles on your ride now & where are you on due, past & present, scheduled maintenance???? Are you up to date on ALL scheduled replacement items????

So, list ALL your trouble codes, in the order you pulled them & all the parts you've replaced during this problem period & we'll all give you our best guesses on your next best step!!!
