difference 6.9 vs 7.3

A friend just purchased a 1986 f-350, which I know had a 6.9 factory, however the previous owner said a new engine was installed, and that it was a 7.3. From what I saw all accessories from the 86 MY were used, fuel filter housing, etc. There are no tags anywhere on the engine. Is there any way to visually tell a 6.9 from a 7.3?

Thanks

yepper, the 7.3 has webbs along the lower edge of the head for strength where the 6.9 heads were flat. The head bolts in the 7.3 were larger too, but you cant tell them apart til you have one of each side by side.

Look at the serial number. It will have a 6.9 or 7.3 in it. The number is on the driver's side behind the injection pump gear cover on the flat spot (right behind the tach sender).
