Hey there from tropical Cleve.OH (I wish) I'm new to the big fords (460) , played with a couple of 351's in the past but was mostly chevy I'm now creating in some people's mind a monster hence the frankenford name. I have a 64 GMC with the 305 V6 that is going to scrapyard and I want to install a 1984 460/c6 for power, somehow I'll figure it out.Been starting to look through past forums for info and hopefully if I'm not totally hated for my choices I'll ask questions later. Why GMC ? It was available in relatively good shap for good price. Why a 460 swap ? Good torque/power big block ,better priced than others ,still runs really good with 120,000 mi. my rear end is already a ford style dana 60 4:11, allways wanted a big block ford . Want to build it for torque using as many stock style parts as possible.
Hello- Welcome to FTE! Check out the list of tech forums and the 460 engine forum we have here. We can't help you much with the GMC aspects but I can understand using what you have! There is a wealth of information and expertise here to help you. There are a number of links in my sig below to help you also. Have fun!
btw, a 460 with 120K is overdue for a timing chain if it has not been done. The OEM timing set has a nylon cam gear that fails between 80 and 120 K miles. Check it out with the guys in the 385 series engine forum.
Thanks, I need all the help I can get with the things to watch out for and things to change . When weather permits I will pull the motor and put on a stand to check bearings , crank, change pump and chain, maybe a cam depending on monies.
That will be an interesting swap. With the right combination of stock parts it will have good torque and power. A good swap is the 69 429 T-Bird timing chain gear set.
