I changed the oil in my 460 that is in my 80 Bronco using 10-40 oil, and when started I had very low oil pressure. The oil pressure was fine before the change. I removed the filter and replaced it with a new one, no change in pressure. Next I changed the oil to 10-30 because it is cold here, no change in the pressure, so I pull the filter again and pushed in on the relief valve and reinstalled it and the pressure came up to normal. Has anyone had problems like this? The 1st filter was a Puralator Pur One and the 2nd one was a regular Puralator. Thanks for infromation, so I can stop this for happenning agin.

You know I have the same issue on my engine. I thought it was the Fram filter but it didn't stop doing it after I changed to a FoMoCo one either. I guess I will pull the oil filter again and push on the drain back to see if it seats.
I'm confused by reading this thread. How can the oil pressure be affected by the bypass valve in the filter? I thought it only operated when the element was stopped up. I always thought the pressure limit was set by the valve in the oil pump.
pushing on the BPV on the filter should not change a thing. That valve is only used to bypass excessive pressure on start up or when the filter plugs up. It won't affect your pressure reading.
That's what I thought to start with, hence the reason I was confused by the early posts! I just can't see how the new filter could have had anything to do with the greatly lowered pressure unless both the filter element and the filter bypass path were severely restricted.
There is a bypass valve in the oil filter, but it's job is to bypass the filter element id the oil pressure becomes to high due to a filter getting plugged as it gets dirty. It has nothing to do with contolling the pressure out of the pump.
