I have a 2001 F-150 Supercrew, 5.4 liter, 4-wheel drive. 61,000 +/- miles. Run Mobil 1 5W30 Ext Performance but I rarely go over 5k miles before I change the oil and filter. Fairly new Fram air filter, changed fuel filter in past year and I run only quality gas. I also throw a bottle of Techron in every fifth tank or so. For some reason, my gas mileage has decreased from 375 miles per tank to 225. My power has dropped and now she bucks under load. I can make it do it whenever I want to simply by backing off the throttle going up a slight incline. She idles perfectly and the idiot light on the dash (check engine) hasnt come on at all. The bucking issue happened once before about a year and half ago but it turned out to be a defective coil pack and wasnt mearly as severe. I'm hoping it was just a case of bad gas but I really dont think it will be that simple and my mechanic hasnt a clue.Anyone got any ideas?
I'd check, in no particular order:
02 sensor(s)
MAF (both the voltage and barometric pressure; not all scan tools can check the barometric; clean the sensor also)
EGR/DPFE
PCV
Fuel pressure
Coil packs/plugs
Well my mechanic suggested that since I never stomp the gas and fully open my injectors, to give it a try. Well I tried it on the way home and the more gas I gave it, the worse it got. I'm dropping it off tomorrow and I had actually thought of the o2 sensors. I'm hoping its not the fuel pump or the catalytic. Love the truck but like most people I dont want to sink that kind of cash into it at only 61k.
