It also came with a special options grouping, A,B,C, and D. Which included Air conditioning, power steering, brakes and tinted glass on the D packaged equipped Explorers.
Explorer package A consisted of a chrome grille, chrome fender moldings, Hood ornament and bedside nameplates, Special Pinstriping different depending on year model, and Mag style wheel covers on 4x2 F-100 and F-150 and bright polished hubcaps on F-250 and F-350. Also could include special interior trim, unique seat covers, and unique paint colors.
I have an explorer tech album showing pictures of the various F-series Explorers from 1968, to their end in 1986. Worth looking at, to see how they changed year to year. Just have a look in my gallery for the tech album.
It sounds like you are missing your bedside nameplates. Look for three small holes above - or below, the red clearence light where the badge would have been placed.
Hope this helps you out.

May I suggest reading this Read First thread to help navigate this forum.... it comes in real handy for new users.
Especially Post #1 on it.

The Ranger was a Basic Trim Series with even more upgrades depending on which Ranger you got.
There was Ranger Explorer, Ranger XLT and Ranger Lariat.
You could get a Custom Explorer as well as the lower end Custom which means what says: Custom Made to your liking.
Here is the 78 Explorer Brochure to give you a better idea
