windshield sprayer questions

82 f150, 302, C4 fx40 (i think), 4wd

It was snowing sunday-monday, and on the way to school I got splashed with some nasty sludge off a semi(snow/salt/roadcrap)... I tried the wipers, and it was good, untill the water was gone. Then I got some wonderfull streakage, and I realized that I dont know how to use the sprayers...

How do I use them, and if theyre broken (i assume so, sitting on&off past 5 years), where do i start?
Id love to have a way to wash my windsheild... SO any help is appreciated
Tks alot
~Nate

First you need to fill iup the bottle with the correct wiper washer fluid, although water will work in a pinch, and is good enough for testing.

Second, press down on the windshield wiper washer ****. Not only is it a turn type switch, (to turn the wipers on and off) it is also a push button type, (to activate the washers).

If they work, then fine, if they don't the only thing it could be is either, the switch itself (highly unlikely), the hose is rotted or missing, the pump in the tank is shot, or the sprayer on the cowl is plugged.

assuming you are getting power at the pump plug. A simple test can tell you that however, with a voltmeter, and somebody pressing the switch inside.

You can replace any component of this system fairly cheap by getting replacements out of a u-pull it.

Hope this helps.

This is opening up a bag of worms... theres one 15 min away, but theyre a-holes. Since im under 18 I cannot even ENTER the yard.
First try, got the "too muddy, try again tomarrow"
Second try, got the "i dont want you to get hurt"... I said if i get hurt, its my falt anyways... no go
3rd try "Minors are not allowed"

ERGGGG I'm really pissed... I even ASKED for a wavier to sign, and they said their unsurance wouldnt like that... I dont do waviers either, usually

I'll get right on testing it with new fluid, and new hoses (later tonight)
I didnt notice the pump working either... no noise (BUT i was in the cab, door opened)

Where is the pump?

Tks alot

The Pump is in the washer bottle itself. It sounds like the Pump is shot. you can replace it, and I think ford carries it, but it's simpler and cheaper to get a whole bottle with pump from out of a wreckers.

I don't see anything wrong with a universal one. Although there are so many ones out there that are the right one for this vehicle, it would be a shame IMO to have to resort to one.

There is just two wires going to the stock pump. One is ground and the other is hot, when the switch in the dash is pressed. Hope this helps.

you can get a new washer pump from the local parts house i think i paid like 10 dollars for mine anf put it in the old jug and it works great. After installing a new washer pump i recomend a new hose to the sprayer nozzle along with a hose clamp on the jug end. Mine would keep poping the hose off and all the fluid would drain out.
