Question chain guides-cassettes

can the timing chain guides/cassettes be changed on a 4.0l. sohc engine without disturbing the timing, or pulling the engine? its a 2000 explorer xlt. awd. Thanks.

Smile junk yard hauler

i am selling my 2000 xlt explorer for just about scrap price. tired of its undependability. it will make a great junk yard hauler!

The primary guide can be done without removing the motor, but not the secondary. I've had mine "fixed" twice and the rattle comes back.

Thanks pwo1. primary meaning the front chain, and secondary the rear chain? I never seen a motor so complicated with chain. a rube goldberg comes to mind. thanks.

The primary chain is on the left head, this is the one with the most problems. The right head the chain is on the back, so the motor has to be pulled to replace, but not to time.

My 1999 Explorer with the 4.0 SOHC is showing the same symptoms. It sounds like the rear timing chain rattle described above. What problems can this cause if left alone?
