looking for any info on this .. is their any difference in a t 5 from year to year ?? is ther a differenc in a world class or are thay the same trans ??witch are the best years to get one from and from what car or truck ?? what parts are needed cost ,, fit and finish ?? so on and so forth .. thanks for any input russ
I'll tell you one thing, invest in a few of them, you'll be needing them.
They won't hold up to the torque of an FE.
thats right....they dont hold up to the torque of my 4 cylinder mustang.....I have one in right now that wont take 1st, goes to 2nd ok, have to no clutch it for 3rd....I wouldnt mess with a t-5 for a fe
thanks i just read somewhere that it would work and hoped it would seeing how thay put them behind 5.0's .... but in all honesty i dont want to loose my 3 on the tree so i think ill redirect my energy on a rear end gear swap 2.75 3.00 i have 3.25 in their now and turn about 3 k at 75 mph
Certain models of WC T5 can take up to 330 Ft-lbs of torque. I'd say that's a bit on the low side for an FE. Not to mention you'd have to make an adapter plate to mount it to an FE bellhousing.
If you're looking for an O/D tranny, a better alternative would be what's known as a "toploader imposter". These were available in intermdiate-size cars, vans and light-duty trucks in the late '70s. They look just like a toploader 4-speed, hence the name, but actually have an overdriven top gear. I have one I bought by mistake a number of years ago, thinking it was a regular toploader. They're actually fairly common. Here's more info on them:

All T5's since the mid 80's have been world class (WC). Nothing special about them so don't get fooled by the world class rating.
The T5z version of the WC tranny is rated to handle 330tq and has different 1, 2, 3 and 5 gear ratios than the standard WC t5's, and steel bearing retainer, and is sometimes refered to as a close ratio t5, biggest difference in ratios being 1st at 2.95 vs 3.35 for the standard WC.
As mentioned here already, the t5 is not real reliable behind a light fox chassis Mustang, I'd certianly not put one in a heavy chassis rig with a big block... it would want to distort the main shaft and spread the gears to eat itself with any hard acceleration or load.
I would use a TKO 600 or 500, it's rated at 600 and 500 pounds torque and 5 speed with two different ratio OD's. They will directly bolt up to a FE motor, Dodge or GM no adapter hodge podge extra waste of money crap. They are stronger, shift faster and smoother than a NV4500, yes I have hot rodded a truck with a NV4500, Dodge diesel that was pumped and a road race Vette with a TKO 600. With tears I walked away from the Vette after the test drive wanting a Vette like that. They come with a 2.87 1st gear, .64 or .82 OD. A first choice should I go back to a stick with 482" FE as it may trash a C-6, I question a Toploaders strength over time besides the lack of OD. Your talking around $1,700 plus but then a Gear Vender add on OD will be $2,200 before install.
From what I have have found a TKO has the quality of the R 380 ZF box which I have rebuilt in the Rover Discovery, it is full synchro including reverse, all gears run on needle bearings with a low pressure oil pump and pressure system. Yup, German crap maybe to some people, ZF transmission / transaxle in Pantera's, F-1's and others.
.....=o&o>.....
