Edelbrock 1406

Tossed the leaky Holly and installed an Edelbrock 1406.

This is to others running this carb. Have you changed the Rods/Jets according to the book that came with the carb? And if so any success using the book as a guide? I am planning on leaning out some, just wondering.

YES

I have changed just about everything, and did follow the book!
On My 390 going larger in the jet size was dramatic. Change the rods for slight improvements. I now use the `stock` setup for the street.
But at the strip i go up `several` sizes on the rods.
I don`t have the book here now, or I could tell you.
You can go `larger` on the jets and not see any great change in color to the plugs in the short run.

If you get any `hesitation` when you slightly open the throttle, try going to `smaller rods like .072x.037 (Guessing here)..I think stock is .075x.047 (guessing here)

By all means, play with it! BUT, I'm sure you'll find that the stock jetting is just about as lean as you can get without pre-ignition.

The beauty of the Carter/Edelbrock carb, is how easy it is to adjust!

Found a shop that carries the jets/rods. Leaned out one step from stock, timing set at sticker 16 btdc, installed new set of 45s gapped to 45, have the pertronix ignitor/coil and wire upgrade. Ran just fine, no lag or ping under load, will check plugs after awhile.

This being a stock 74 junior smog motor must be the reason I can lean out so far with that much advance?

I leaned my idle down a step, but ended up leaving the cruise mixture about stock. I believe all I changed was the rods. I had mine so lean when I was experimenting, it wouldn't even pull itself up a hill. The Edelbrock is so much nicer than a Holley for everyday driving.
