I just bought a 96 F150 with the 300ci engine and 308 rear end. it is a auto and in the Ford trailer towing guide it claims 4900lbs of towing capacity ....I was skeptical but I am only going to be pulling between 1800 and 2300 lbs....Should I be OK....it is a Eddie Bauer edition with 74,000 miles on it and is very clean.....knew the owner and paid $4000.00....sound fair ?
I would think you should be fine. I had that ratio in my 77 with a 300 carbed and a three speed manual, and was able to get my boat, which ways a few hundred pounds more than you are looking at, out of the water all the time... although it probably wasn't the best for the clutch. With an auto, you will be fine.
Have a 96 4.9 with 5spd manual. I pull a 3500# camper just fine. I've pulled as much as 8800# several times with no worries. I have beefed up the springs though to accomodate the increased load.
