Time for new engine?

I have a 150, with 217000 miles. The truck has always run great until last weekend. It started misfiring and the codes i had were 1. misfire in cyl 4 and 2. egr valve. Well I replaced the passenger side sparkplugs except for number six. The socket wouldn't grip the sparkplug. Anyways I replaced these and the truck ran fine. Now tonight driving home the misfire came back only worse. When I read the codes I got misfires in seven, and eight. I also got a lean condition on bank one. Not sure what that exactly means.
Is the engine finally reaching the end of its life?
I noticed that this truck doesn't have your normal distributer cap either, how does this setup work?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I did #6 spark plug by taking the rubber ring out of the socket and dropping it into the cylinder first, then add your extensions , crack the spark plug loose, put the rubber ring back in the socket, and repeat the process.. It'll come right outta' there.

But. I don't think that's gonna fix the problem, because I have the same thing happening on mine with about the same amount of miles, and no plugs, wires, or coils have helped.

I would think, you need a compression test done.

OH, yeh, start the engine, with it idling, take out the oil dipstick, if you feel puffs coming out of the hole where the dipstick goes, thats blow by from the cylinders going back into the bottom end, ( or something like that ).... means you got Issue's with rings....

hope this helps

One other thing, not to hog the board, Sorry ops, I'm in a hurry this morning. But, I was told that, when the Misfire system detects severe misfires it will shut down whatever injector is on that cylinder, to protect the Cat converter and that might be the reason its giving you that bank 1 Lean code.

Coils maybe?

I should have added in my orginal post that this is a 4.6 8 cyl engine, sorry.

I also did take the rubber out of the socket for the removal of #6 cyl but I can't even feel it get onto the plug.
I have this bad feeling that this thing is finally gonna die

217,000 miles is pretty good! I have seen a few 4.6's with 500,000 km on them which is about 310,000 miles or so, and they still ran really good. Hopefully you can just change some plugs and give er a tune up and she will be fine!

Misfires can be attributed to other items. Is this a COP 4.6 or a wired with coil packs version? Injectors can act up and whole rails can cause issues, as it alternates it could be a sensor having issues.

If you have good compression on all 8 cylinders, it's not the engine, just some minor pieces that have yet to be determined that need to be replaced.

I'm going to guess that this is the wired with coil packs. Each side goes to a seperate coil on each side of the block. I am going to get into this thing on Friday hopefully and see if I can figure this out.

That would be the coil pack variety 5.4.

I think I'm going to start with replacing the coil packs. Are they expensive? Do most parts store's carry them?

thanks

I am unsure, but I would think that you could order them if they didn't have them in stock. I have seen aftermarket brands, like MSD and Accel, that sell higher output packs that work for the 4.6. These would probably be an order item or catalog buy.

lean condition could be faulty O2 sensors or clogged fuel filter.

Before I start getting into this today let me give you guys some more information. About three weeks ago I had one code that read insuffient egr flow. I pretty much just ignored this. Then about a week ago I had a code again for the same and a misfire in cylinder four. I replaced the plugs on the passenger side. It ran fine for a day. Then the last set of codes I had three, two for cylinders seven and eight with a misfire and a lean condition on bank two.

My plan to start today is to replace the remaining spark plugs, and figure out the orginal code for the egr?
How do I test the egr, and is there a way to test the coil? How do I do this?
thanks again

Replacing the EGR, royal PITA! I have to replace the tube as well and can't get it disconnected from the manifold, all rusted up

got the new egr on finally! I am hearing a lot of air when turning the truck off so I have to figure out where that is coming from.Sounds like its coming from either the front of the engine or the passenger side. I did clear all the codes to try to start from the beginning
