starting problems

my 62 f100 is having trouble starting. it seems when i flip the key nothing will happen...until i keep flipping it, on the fifth whatever flpi it turns over..once it starts to turn it fires up real nice so i don't think the starter is bad but it seems to take a repeated quick turns of the key to get it to try to turn...I replaced the started solenoid and nothing changed...my truck used to start on the first turn every time and a few weeks ago this ordeal started...any help would help

If you try jumping the solenoid and it still take a few bumps before the starter turns you need a starter if it turns right away every time you need an ignition switch. Rich

Sounds like a switch to me as well. It sounds like it is shorted out.

Before spending the bucks on stuff first I would suggest cleaning the battery terminals and cable ends. If you battery cable ends have been cut off and now have the clamp on type replacements they should be taken apart and cleaned. The bare wires that these clamps connect to should also be thoroughly cleaned. Wet cold weather can start a problem like this. Hope that helps you out.

Excellent advice from Mark. I wanted to add that the small switch wire going to the solenoid can get a loose connection that will cause intermittent starting. Usually the connection is just a push on piece of nothing that you can simply squeeze with a pair of pliars and everyhing is snug as new.

Clean tight connections are the name of the game in any starting system. Still likely it is the switch but no bother. The parts are common, inexpensive, and easily replaced.
