Fuel problem

My 88 bronco has had about 3 fuel filters replaced now. The only thing i know so far about the fuel system, is that someone has bypassed a black canister between the in tank, and the inline fuel pump. What is this canister, and how should it be hooked up? And is it bad? how can i test it? could this be why my filter keeps clogging, or am i going to have to drop the tank and see whats possably in it? Thanks for the input.

Its the reserve holding tank for the high pressure fuel pump on the frame rail. Bypassing it forces the low-pressure pump in the tank to work harder. Chances are the filter isn't necessarily getting that clogged but with no reserve fuel in the holding tank the low pressure pump can't keep up causing fuel pressure problems because the high pressure pump is being "starved".

Why would somebody bypass it, and how does it need to be hooked up? Which hoses go where.

Also, why are some people calling it a "Carbon Canister" when i describe it.

The carbon cannister is up front under the hood. Its an entirely different animal. It filters fuel vapors before they are returned to the tank. Its mounted on the passenger side frame rail very near that side of the radiator.

The reserve tank is only used with dual feul tank systems though! Just went looking for this info because I couldn't remember why it sounded so odd last night when I first posted.

My 86 had two fuel filters, the first was a basket or canister type on the fram rail behind the tranny crossmember. Bottom of the canister threads on/off and there was a replaceable paper type fuel filter in there. The second was an inline on the engine side of the high pressure pump. Do not remember when they changed the configuration, my 96 has the single pump in the tank and the single inline filter in the spot where the basket filter was on the 86.
I do remember the first time I changed the "basket" filter on the 86, getting the base off was a pain in the posterior. If the previous owner could not get it off, that could explain why it was bypassed. I seem to remember finally using a strap wrench to get it off. The first time it was nasty and filled with crud, probably because the previous owner could not figure it out and just ignored it.
The "basket" was black, about 4" tall (overall) and the base (removeable) had the litte "finger scallops" in it, like some oil filters do.
Not sure if this is what you are looking at, but it is a possibility.
Hope this helps.
