Fusible Link?

My vehicle is a 1985 F150 5.0 EFI. One of the wires going to the coil melted. It has a tan/brown plastic piece that looks like a fusible link. Does anyone know what might have caused the melt down? I am also unable to find a replacement part...any ideas would be appreciated.

Most probable cause is a short, wire rubbed bare and touching, etc. Might have to go looking in the junkyards for the wire, it would be cheaper that way too.

Yeah, something might have rubbed through...

I wouldnt trust junkyard wires, especially if you can do it yourself for around $5...

Go to the hardware store, get some wire of the same color and size, and get the correct ends for it. Make sure, if you get the crimp on ones, to put a smeer of dilectric grease on it. Keeps it from coroding

It wouldnt be the wire for your tach, would it?

I found out what the part is that melted down on me. It is a 22K resistor that goes to the coil. My problem now is tracing and replacing the wires that burned up. Thanks for the help.

I wasn't meaning for him to rewire his truck from the junkyard but, if he could find one like his then he would at least have an idea of what he needs. You can purchase fusible links but some wires/connectors are not made any longer or are at least "hard to find".
Just an idea anyway. Good luck.

Gwall, whatever you do, DO NOT replace a fusible link with another wire of the same color and size. While it would act as a fuse, assuming you got the correct size wire, fusible links have special insulation that will not catch fire when the wire melts.
Normal wire insulation is not supposed to either, but is not rated for the same temperature.
You need to get a schematic on your truck, lots of them available for small amounts on the web, or maybe a Chilton's in a library, and make sure if it is a fusible link or not. It should have a small flag or molded part that lets you know.
Fusible wire links are available from eitherr Ford, or lots of aftermarket places.

I think you can replace it with a ballast resistor.

I am back on the road again. I found the resistor at a Ford Dealer. The coil was also bad...probably went out when the wire burned up. I replaced the resistor, coil, and all affected wires and it is running fine...at least for now. Thanks for all your input.
