Hi guys, i have several questions for those who are little more experianced in engine conversions. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1978 ford 300 engine with trans, clutch. I also have the opportunity to purchase a np435 with 205 case.
1) My first question is did ford ever put a 300 ci with a 4 speed in a 4x4?
2) what are my choices for truck candidates to implant the 300 w/4spd into without extensive fabrication, such as trucks that could have came with it.
The 435 with 205 is a option i dont nessacarily need a 4x4.
My goal is to have something i can tow with so someting 3/4-1 ton is ideal.
A lot of 1/2 ton Ford trucks from the 80's came with the 300/4-speed combo. The 4-speed I use is more like a 3-speed because the 1st gear is too low for regular driving. If your thinking of towing that requires a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck, then you're really asking a lot from a 300. It works great in my dad's '84 F150, but I wouldn't use a 300 for heavy work in a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. I'm not saying it can't be done, but don't expect to be passing anybody.
It would be a good combination if you want something with a lot of low end torque. That is what the 300 was known for. It also is very reliable if it is taken care of. I have been trying to get a hold of one that has been sitting in a barn for 12 years. I think that it would be an awesome truck. Like was said before, though, you won't be passing anything.
hi guys, will a c-6 bolt up to a 300? also in your opinion is a 300 better for towing than a 360, i know it will be better gas mileage wise, but putting a 300 4 spd, in place of a 360 4 spd, would it be a wise choice?Or my other choice would be a 300 in place of a 351m,again any input appriciated thanks...mike
I have owned a 1978 ford F250 with a 300 6cy and a np435 4sp tranny and a np203 part time transfer case. It was a great truck and would tow anything, the key was the 4:10 gear ratio, could only go about 55mph on the freeway emty or loaded, mpg ran about 17 on freeway 10 in city. empty. I now own a 1979 with the same motor, tranny and transfer case, it has 3:50 gear ratio and is a F150, its a great truck but I don't have the torqe or payload capacity as the F250. I like this set up because gas milage is ok for daily driving but if you have to tow something you can, the laws says towing speed is 55 mph anyway.
Hi guys, one last question the 300 with 4 speed, will bolt into any truck from 1973-1979 as long as you have the 300 six motor mounts? I am going to look into a f-250 2wd for towing and i because i really dont need a 4x4,but if i come across a 4x4 i will still go through with the same conversion.I appriciate the input and look forward to anyone's idea on a good tow rig. I want ot go 300 six for the reasons of gas mileage and good low end torque, just a diesel, except alot cheaper to put together.
they used the 300 in 2x4's and 4x4's---in 100's, 150's, 250's, 350's---i actually think the later fuel injected ones ran great--better air flow---but they can be made to run--with a few mods--
